Fall 2026 Fashion Trends: Subverting Expectations on the Runway

By Sophie Laurent •

Waist Emphasis

The fall 2026 models demonstrated a clear desire to contradict common expectations. Knitwear became an evening layer, while formal suits were moved into daylight. From Miuccia Prada’s satin dresses worn with scarves to Chloé’s chiffon skirts in folksy plaid, statement looks that seemed wrong but were perfectly right dominated the runway. Even the subtle styling tricks and silhouettes appeared slightly adjusted. Michael Rider at Celine and Cate Holstein at Khaite made the case for tying looks with red accents. Simone Rocha, Tory Burch and Matthieu Blazy at Chanel dropped the waistline on dresses lower than ever seen, offering the defining shape of the season. And Julian Klausner revitalized Dries Van Noten’s classic waist theory through statement cummerbunds, the hero accessory of the fall. Yet, whether you lean classic or take an experimental approach, the fall 2026 collections had something for everyone.

Plaid in an Elegant Style

Below, we break down seven of the season’s most important trends.

The waist has been a focal point in recent seasons. In spring, everything revolved around tying a boho scarf around the midsection. Now, designers are drawing inspiration from men’s wear. Cummerbunds were everywhere on the runway, and while some looked fairly traditional, others appeared in unexpected shades or were adorned with surprising decorations. For a light twist on this look, try securing a silk opera scarf around your waist to add interest to an outfit of black trousers and a blue button-down shirt. Or, if you want the integrated effect, try double-waist trousers from Róhe (personally, I can’t stop wearing them). These small details can make your typical office uniform look much more thought-out and chic.

The Disheveled Lady

This season, plaid patterns didn’t give off that farmyard energy. Plaid was chic. Elegantly dressed. Sophisticated. The colors appeared brighter (in contrast with the dark shades for fall), and silhouettes, such as dresses, skirts, evening blouses and evening bags, looked refined. Not to mention the textures: chiffon and silk made the usual country pattern look luxurious. Whether you wear a plaid skirt to the office with knee-high boots and a neutral blazer, or choose a plaid dress for a cocktail party, this trend can breathe new life into your wardrobe.

Red Accents

This season, the runways embraced feminine pieces styled in a way that reflects the messiness of everyday life. Sweaters and coats were thrown over arms, gloves were clutched in hands, and Prada even offered a coffee-stained cuff. The formula here is quite effortless—that is the point—but investing in a canvas bag with a top handle is always a good idea. So is a pair of leather gloves. Look for silhouettes with imperfect cutouts, like Jil Sander’s pencil skirt with a cut waist, and try replacing your sweater with a more feminine shell top. It is the contrast that makes everything work.

Sweaters for the Evening

Red has become a new neutral this season, elevating every look to a higher level. Brooches, belts and jewelry appeared in crimson, while basic pieces like sweaters and denim got new life in scarlet. An excellent starting point is in accessories. Whether you add a brooch to your favorite black blazer for the office, or finish a pair of raw jeans with a white sweater and a red belt, it is the easiest way to make your entire wardrobe look refreshed.

Styling the Tuxedo for Daytime

Sweaters are a constant of the fall, but this season, designers made them look exciting by appealing to less traditional categories (like Dries Van Noten’s Fair Isle sweater set, or Chloé’s matching balaclava and sweater) and styling through the attraction of opposites. From satin dresses worn with sweaters and thick cotton scarves to a floral-embroidered sweater with elegantly dressed bottoms, there were many ways to wear sweaters in the evening.

One of the coolest trends in this season was how designers interpreted tuxedo styling for daytime outfits. Whether you replace your oversized shirt with a tuxedo-style shirt or swap your blazer for a tuxedo jacket to wear with jeans, the look borrows from men’s wear in a distinctively feminine way. The cummerbund trend also fits into this category, offering a refined way to break up a silk dress or to pair denim with a jacket.

Dresses with a Drop Waist

Looking for a dress silhouette with a lifted style? The key is to go low. Drop-waist dresses were everywhere, and the shape gave an edgy twist to other shiny or strict pieces. Some of the waistlines came with belt loops, which truly accentuates the drama of the drop. For others, a direct approach did the job on its own. In both cases, a classic heel (stiletto or almond-shaped) aligns the look, balancing the dress’s proportions for an elegant finish.
